Restlesslegs

contemporary circus show with 5 acrobats and a 50 meter rope

A need to move that is uncommonly hard to describe, similar to an urge to yawn but in your arms or legs. The performance is an exploration of this painful, electrical, creeping, itching, crawling, or numb sensation that ultimately stops you from finding rest.

We are restless, we want to create, we want to participate, we want to be seen, we want to prove to ourselves and each other that we do enough, that we are enough that we are deserving.

The primary inspiration for the project were Sophie’s restless legs, not just metaphorically but as the actual medical condition. In our creation we focus on communicating the parallel between the internal and external struggle of restlessness. It exists both in our bodies and in our societies as conditions we are mostly helpless to change. Yet we are confronted with them regularly and we continuously struggle to cope.

Moreover the condition of restless legs describes the situation of artists in Hungary very well: We have a strong urge to create, to participate. We have a role to play, but our hands are tied and resources are limited. We constantly feel that there is no way out, no real way in, stuck in a state of constant struggle. Yet when it comes down to it we still move, ourselves and each other. Every step counts, is valuable, matters. Even if it is not forward, yet.

The concept of the setup is simple: a single 50 meter long rope rigged through two pulleys that are placed 7 meter high and 2 meters apart from each other. That is all we have and all that separates us. This rope symbolizes our problems, our desires, our road or ladder to reach our goals. It is impossible to climb it alone, it is constantly moving, transforming into a corde-lisse, a cloud swing, a slack rope or to a microphone.
