cirQular project

online circus - street performance - augmented reality

You are not alone here. The place is familiar but something is different. All around you my imagination is waiting to reveal itself. Take my hand and follow me into this world, where everyone climbs, jumps, dances and performs in the theater of my mind. Don’t worry we’re just having fun. I hope you are not afraid to read between the lines or mind a challenge. There are many places to discover and many mysteries to solve. Walk with us!

The cirQular project was our response to the pandemic, to the long period of uncertainty and is designed to be enjoyed at any time. You neither have to sit in a crowded theater for this experience, nor on your couch at home. We encourage our audience to go outside and explore our creation during a walk. It is a cross between an escape room, a city walk and a site-specific circus film.

We capture scenes of the performance at multiple locations with a 360-degree camera. Everyone can watch the videos on their own smartphone upon arrival at the location. You have to find a QR code placed in the space, then by reading it, a youtube video is loaded and the scene comes to life through your mobile device. Scenes are recorded from a fixed point of view, by placing the QR code we will direct the viewer to the same point of view, thus creating a simple ‘augmented reality’ experience without the need for additional soft-/hardware.

We create a series of short sight specific acts/scenes that are spread across the city. They will be connected by little hints, puzzles or hidden coordinates which point to the next location, creating an augmented reality ‘treasure hunt’. This will lead to an interactive experience that is meant to last and be enjoyed long after. We aspire to create a unique story and experience for every edition of cirQular, working together with local artists as well as with the culture and history of the locality.

The first cirQular project premiered in 2021 and was created with the collaboration of Firebirds Productions and Flying Bodies artists, supported by Trafó, House of Contemporary Arts. As the second iteration of the idea we created a treasure hunt for the Flying Bodies Festival at Artus Studió. In 2022 we had a collaboration with the Katapult from Berlin, supported by an Erasmus + project. For the European Capital 2023 we created a piece for Veszprém with local artists and produced a project for Várkert Bazár envolving animations.
