cirQular

- online circus - street performance - augmented reality -

The cirQular project emerged in response to the pandemic and the long period of uncertainty it brought. It is designed to be experienced anytime, anywhere. You don't have to sit in a crowded theatre — or stay on your couch at home. Instead, we invite our audience to step outside and explore our creation during a walk. cirQular lives at the intersection of an escape room, a city walk, and a site-specific circus film.

Scenes are captured at multiple urban locations using a 360-degree camera. Upon arriving at each spot, viewers can watch the corresponding scene on their smartphones. A QR code placed in the environment reveals a YouTube video, bringing the performance to life on the screen. By anchoring each scene to a fixed physical viewpoint through the QR code, we create a simple form of "augmented reality" — without requiring any additional software or hardware.

We design a series of short, site-specific acts spread throughout the city. Each scene is connected by subtle hints, puzzles, or hidden coordinates leading to the next location, turning the experience into an augmented-reality treasure hunt. cirQular is meant to last, to be rediscovered, and to offer a unique journey long after its initial release. Every edition is crafted with local artists, inspired by the culture, stories, and textures of the place.

The first cirQular project premiered in 2021 in collaboration with Firebirds Productions and Flying Bodies artists, supported by Trafó House of Contemporary Arts. A second edition was created as a treasure hunt for the Flying Bodies Festival at Artus Stúdió. In 2022, we collaborated with Katapult in Berlin through an Erasmus+ project. For the European Capital of Culture 2023, we produced a cirQular experience in Veszprém with local artists, followed by another edition at Várkert Bazár incorporating animation.
